Wallenberg Foundation awards $11.5M to leverage AI and boost clinical research, innovation

Sweden’s Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation awarded SEK 125M (about $11.5M) to Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm as part of a SEK 1.6 billion ($147M) collaborative investment in clinical research. A co-funded, multi-institution initiative, the funding will support as many as 80 clinical fellows—physicians combining research and patient care—and joint projects with universities and regional partners. The effort focuses on strengthening patient-oriented research, advancing AI and molecular medicine collaborations, and boosting Sweden’s life sciences competitiveness while addressing declining physician-researcher participation through long-term, workforce-focused support.
