Mott Foundation awards $5M to UM-Flint for intercollegiate athletics and rec center overhaul

The University of Michigan-Flint has announced a $5 million grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to launch an intercollegiate athletics program and support student recreation center renovations. The grant provides initial capital and operational support while helping UM-Flint build momentum for additional philanthropy. The university plans to launch seven championship sports in fall 2028, pending approvals, with basketball and volleyball based at the renovated facility. A proposed $34 million recreation center overhaul would add collegiate-grade amenities while benefiting recreation, wellness and community events, strengthening student recruitment, retention and engagement with downtown Flint.
