Wikipedia, under threat, pushes back on AI scraping and censorship, tightens controls, boosts protections

The nonprofit is expanding lobbying, charging major AI firms for high-volume data access, limiting scraping, and strengthening protections for editors facing harassment and imprisonment. Moreover, as Wikimedia reports declining human traffic due to AI summaries and rising legal and censorship pressures worldwide, the organization is recruiting new contributors to sustain the platform’s role as a widely used, neutral reference source.
