Michael Moritz, Crankstart, expand college access with $18M scholarship pledge in San Francisco

Michael Moritz, billionaire venture capitalist and founder of the Crankstart Foundation, is funding hundreds of college scholarships across San Francisco, the University of Chicago, the Juilliard School in New York City, and the University of Oxford. In San Francisco alone, this year 223 high school seniors will now receive $15,000 annually for college, with more than $18 million expected over six years. At Oxford, where effort is rooted in his father’s Holocaust survival through a scholarship to the university, 14% of all students receive Moritz-backed aid. Crankstart reportedly directs over $200 million annually toward health, housing, jobs, and civil rights initiatives in the Bay Area.
