Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy has announced a $1.15 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to preserve its historic headquarters in Alberta, Alabama, and strengthen its long-term operations. Founded in 1966, the Freedom Quilting Bee became a nationally recognized cooperative that created economic opportunities for Black women in rural Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement through artistry, entrepreneurship, and retail partnerships. The three-year grant will support preservation upgrades, accessibility improvements, and organizational capacity, expanding exhibitions, education, research, and community programming that sustain this landmark’s cultural legacy through 2029.
