Gates Foundation commits $15M in emergency funding to contain Ebola outbreak in Central Africa

The Gates Foundation has announced a $15 million emergency funding commitment to support the response to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The funding will provide $5 million each to Africa CDC, the World Health Organization, and WHO AFRO to strengthen regional coordination, frontline operations, cross-border surveillance, diagnostics and emergency logistics. The commitment supports the African-led “one plan, one budget, one team” response framework designed to improve operational coordination and limit wider regional spread. The foundation is also boosting its support for vaccine, therapeutic, and diagnostic development through CEPI as health authorities prioritize rapid detection and containment measures.
