Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Dentistry in Richmond has announced a $5 million grant from the Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation, marking the school’s largest cash gift and the foundation’s largest contribution. The award will help construct the school’s new building, expanding clinical capacity and dental education and improving patient access across Virginia. VCU’s School of Dentistry, the state’s only dental school and primary dental safety-net clinic, handles more than 100,000 patient visits annually, including care for Medicaid patients and adults with special needs. The investment will also boost efforts to address Virginia’s ongoing shortage of oral healthcare professionals.
