OpenAI commits $25B and launches $1B first-year plan to target disease, economy, AI safety

The OpenAI Foundation, leveraging resources from its recent recapitalization, has launched a $1B initiative to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits humanity, as part of its broader $25B commitment to curing diseases and advancing AI resilience. According to the post from board chair Bret Taylor, initial focus areas include AI-driven Alzheimer’s research, public health data expansion, economic opportunity, AI safety, biosecurity, and protecting youth. Led by Jacob Trefethen and Wojciech Zaremba, the Foundation is building a dedicated team to scale these initiatives. Through strategic investments and partnerships, it aims to accelerate scientific discovery, improve healthcare, and prepare society for challenges posed by advanced AI.
