Carnegie commits $18M to fellowships and research on impact of political polarization on democracy

The Andrew Carnegie Foundation has announced an $18 million commitment to expand its Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program and support scholarly research on political polarization and its impact on democracy in the United States and around the world. The three-year funding initiative will provide $200,000 fellowship grants to humanities and social science scholars, enabling up to two years of dedicated research. The program aims to generate new insights into issues such as populism, democratic resilience, and strategies for reducing polarization before it becomes entrenched or leads to violence. The first cohort under the expanded focus will be announced in 2027.
