Australia’s U Sydney architecture school receives $29M from alumni couple for expansion project

Australia’s University of Sydney has announced an A$74 million (US$53.7 million) co-investment with alumni architects Susan and Garry Rothwell, through their family foundation, to create a new campus precinct for the university’s architecture, design, and planning school. The couple have awarded US$29 million, while the university will commit US$24.7 million to develop the 21,500-square-foot Rothwell Building to be linked to the school’s existing facilities. Intended to address a 145% rise in enrollment over the past decade, the expanded footprint will provide studio, fabrication, and collaborative learning spaces while strengthening a curriculum focused on sustainability, climate resilience, urban design, and social equity.
