Analysis: OpenAI, Anthropic IPOs could unlock billions and reshape the philanthropy landscape

In a news analysis, The New York Times reports that blockbuster initial public offerings expected from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other technology companies could generate tens of billions of dollars in future charitable giving, prompting nonprofits to prepare for a potential fundraising windfall. Universities, foundations, and philanthropy advisers are positioning themselves to attract gifts from newly wealthy founders and employees, many of whom could benefit from tax-efficient charitable giving strategies. Anthropic’s founders have pledged to donate 80% of their wealth–perhaps $90 billion or more–while the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation holds a 26% ownership stake in OpenAI (currently valued at $852 billion).
