Novo Nordisk Foundation backs Parkinson’s stem cell therapy research at Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet

The Novo Nordisk Foundation in Denmark has awarded DKK 10 million ($1.4 million) to Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet to advance stem cell–based therapy research for Parkinson’s disease. The project aims to develop high-quality dopamine-producing nerve cells capable of restoring motor function lost as the neurodegenerative disease progresses. The funding will support translational research designed to move promising laboratory and animal-model results closer to human clinical trials. The work has the potential to improve the precision and effectiveness of cell replacement therapies while reducing risks tied to unwanted cell development after transplantation.
