University College London receives £8M to launch quantum spacetime institute

University College London has announced an £8 million ($10.7 million) gift from the David and Elaine Potter Foundation to establish the David Potter Institute for Quantum Information and Spacetime. The institute will combine theoretical and experimental physics to test whether spacetime is governed by quantum theory, developing quantum sensors and experiments that could distinguish competing theories of gravity. Researchers will also explore sensing applications in healthcare and potential “spinout” technologies. The institute will train students and host visiting researchers across physics and related disciplines.
