Buffalo nonprofits praise Wilson Foundation investments while raising oversight, management concerns

The Buffalo News is reporting growing tension between the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, a 20-year limited-life philanthropic organization founded in 2015 by the late owner of the Buffalo Bills, and civic and nonprofit leaders in Western New York, despite the foundation’s transformative investments across the region. The foundation has committed $250 million to Ralph Wilson Park, $100 million to arts and cultural organizations, and millions more to parks, education, workforce development, and economic development initiatives. According to the Buffalo News, nonprofit leaders assert that foundation staff have exercised excessive influence over governance and operations, created inconsistent grant expectations, and treated some executives—particularly women—with disrespect. The foundation said it has launched an internal review with outside counsel while reaffirming its commitment to respectful, collaborative partnerships.
