World Food Programme receives $800M in emergency aid from U.S. amid global hunger crisis

The United Nations World Food Programme has received $800 million from the United States government to expand emergency food assistance and strengthen responses to rising global hunger. The funding will help pre-position food, expand cash-assistance programs, and maintain supply chains in crisis-affected regions including Lebanon, Haiti, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The grant follows sharp declines in U.S. humanitarian aid, with federal contributions falling to about $2 billion in 2025—roughly half from 2024. Overall U.S. humanitarian funding to the United Nations also dropped to $3.4 billion from $14.1 billion. Despite narrowed support, the award provides critical funding to bolster WFP’s immediate capacity to respond to escalating food crises worldwide.
