University of Arizona shifts control of $70M in endowment payouts amid financial pressures

The University of Arizona Foundation will transfer $70 million in non-scholarship endowment payouts to the University of Arizona, shifting control of annual distributions. The move aims to improve efficiency and visibility while preserving donor restrictions and endowment principal. The foundation, a separate nonprofit entity with an endowment of $1.4 billion, said the change will also help the university meet cash-on-hand targets required by the Arizona Board of Regents and bond rating agencies. The transfer comes as UA faces financial pressure and narrowing cash reserves, a concern reflected in rating concerns raised by Moody’s and S&P Global Ratings.
