Humanity AI collaborative commits $18M to shape AI literacy, governance, and democratic safeguards

Humanity AI—a five-year, $500 million initiative led by the MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with funders including Omidyar Network, the Ford, Mellon, and Mozilla foundations—has announced $18 million in inaugural commitments to advance public-interest AI. Grants totaling $5 million were awarded nonprofits including the AI Now Institute, Center for Democracy and Technology, and Pulitzer Center to support AI accountability, civil rights, journalism, worker advocacy, and education reform. A $3 million grant will launch an AI civics initiative led by Data & Society and the Digital Public Library of America, expanding AI literacy nationwide. Another $10 million will fund for future grassroots and policy-focused AI initiatives.
