The El Paso Community Foundation will take over management of KTEP 88.5-FM, the University of Texas at El Paso’s nonprofit National Public Radio station, under a five-year public-service operating agreement expected to be finalized soon. The foundation will operate KTEP in exchange for free use of its studio and broadcasting equipment and has an option to purchase the station for $1 million within three years. The agreement follows federal funding cuts to public broadcasting and aims to sustain KTEP’s regional news and information mission. The foundation also plans to increase student employment and assess community programming needs.
