FAU, Brown, FIU share NIH $3.8M to develop next-generation malaria drugs

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded a five-year, $3.8 million grant to Florida Atlantic University, Brown University, and Florida International University–shared equally among the three institutions–to accelerate preclinical development of next-generation malaria therapies. The initiative aims to develop a new class of drugs targeting Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for the deadliest form of malaria. The grant will support collaborative research to identify and advance novel drug candidates that overcome growing antimalarial resistance by targeting the parasite protein PfGARP.
