$18.5M will expand Norfolk, Virginia’s Douglas MacArthur memorial and archives

The General Douglas MacArthur Foundation has announced an $18.5 million expansion of the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia, to protect and expand access to its growing research and archival collections. Funding will come from the foundation’s endowment, a capital fundraising campaign, and a planned $2 million commitment from the City of Norfolk. The project will add a 10,000-square-foot second story to the Jean MacArthur Research and Education Center to be completed by 2028. The expansion will preserve 140,000 artifacts, enhance research and education spaces, and strengthen long-term stewardship of the memorial’s historical holdings related to the general who died in 1964, who served as a top U.S. commander during World War II and the Korean War, achieving the rank of General of the Army–one of only five people to hold the rank in American history.
