Canada’s Holodomor Legacy Initiative backs scholarship addressing 1932-33 Ukraine genocide

The Holodomor Legacy Initiative has announced 13 research grants totaling C$155,860 ($114,000) to scholars studying the Holodomor, the Soviet-era famine perpetrated against Ukraine in 1932-33, an internationally recognized genocide in which 3.9 million people died, one-third of them children. The initiative is funded by Canada’s foreign affairs department and implemented by Cowater International and the Canada Ukraine Foundation. HLI supports research, institutional collaboration, historical preservation, and public education to strengthen global understanding of the Holodomor. An international cohort of researchers will explore the famine’s historical context, survivor experiences, political impacts, and legacy.
