Crankstart $9.3M backs Oakland’s bid to combat illegal dumping with tech-driven enforcement 

Michael Moritz, billionaire venture capitalist and founder of the Crankstart Foundation, has committed $9.3 million over three years to the City of Oakland, California, to boost efforts to curb illegal dumping and improve neighborhood cleanliness. The funding will support technology-focused enforcement and prevention initiatives, including more than doubling Oakland’s network of dumping surveillance cameras from 35 to 85, continuing an AI-assisted drone monitoring program, and increasing the use of license-plate recognition tools to identify violators. The award will also fund public education campaigns promoting free bulky-item disposal services and pilot programs aimed at reducing waste generation.
