African Development Bank $15M expands end-to-end cholera vaccine production  in South Africa

The African Development Bank Group has announced a $15 million loan to Biologicals and Vaccines Institute of South Africa (Biovac) in Cape Town, South Africa, to expand Africa’s first end-to-end cholera vaccine manufacturing facility. The financing–backed by the International Finance Corporation, the European Investment Bank, and the Gates Foundation among others–will boost Biovac’s annual production capacity to 500 million doses, support local production of oral cholera and inactivated polio vaccines, and strengthen Africa’s vaccine self-sufficiency. The funding supports a broader expansion project that is expected to create 340 full-time jobs, expand specialized workforce training, and position South Africa as a leading vaccine manufacturing hub on the continent.
