San José State University has announced a $2.4 million estate gift from the Pony Barnes Foundation to advance experiential education at the California school. The bequest honors the legacy of Virginia “Pony” Barnes, a longtime SJSU educator and founder of Montecito-Sequoia Camp in Sequoia National Park. The award will establish an endowed professorship, two scholarship and fellowship funds, and community initiatives that emphasize Barnes’ experiential learning philosophy. The funding will boost SJSU programming focused on direct practice and real-world engagement, linking classroom theory with hands-on teaching, community-based work, and camp-based leadership development that carries Barnes’ ideas to the next generation of educators.
