Mutual Ground receives Illinois $2M to renovate and expand capacity at its Aurora domestic violence shelter

Mutual Ground, an Aurora, Illinois-based nonprofit that provides support services for individuals and families affected by domestic violence, sexual violence, and substance use, has received a $2 million grant from the state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to renovate its shelter facilities. The award will fund critical repairs—including roofing, masonry, HVAC, and hazard mitigation—to stabilize the aging facility and restore damaged interior space to be completed in the spring of 2027. The upgrades will improve safety, expand capacity, and strengthen services for shelter residents while advancing plans for future $6 million campus expansion.
