Mellon grants $1.5M to launch Lewis & Clark College, Albina community education partnership

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a $1.5 million grant to Lewis & Clark College and the Albina Vision Trust in Portland, Oregon, to support a humanities-based partnership focused on restoring and reengaging the city’s historically Black Albina neighborhood. The funding will be used to develop co-designed undergraduate courses created with local residents, offering free, credit-bearing classes that integrate lived experience with academic study. The initiative is intended to promote community-driven education while confronting the legacy of displacement and expanding cultural and learning opportunities in the Albina district.
