The U.S. National Science Foundation has announced a $15 million grant to the NSF Seafood Engine in New England to support fisheries and aquaculture innovation. Led by Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based nonprofit NERACOOS, the initiative spans Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. The two-year award funds R&D using AI, sensors, robotics, biotechnology, apprenticeships, and commercialization for blue-tech companies. The effort aims to strengthen the seafood supply chain, expand opportunities for firms, reshore processing capacity, and reduce the nation’s $20 billion seafood deficit, with potential funding reaching $160 million over ten years.
