Mark and Mary Stevens award $175M to launch Sutter Health, Santa Clara U medical school

The Sutter Health hospital network and Santa Clara University have announced a $175 million gift from venture capitalist Mark Stevens and his wife, Mary–an SCU alumna–to launch the Stevens School of Medicine in Santa Clara, California. The collaboration will establish the San Francisco Bay Area’s first new medical school in more than 100 years and expand physician training within Sutter’s integrated healthcare network. The funding will support the construction of an 82,000-square-foot campus, the development of a technology- and AI-focused curriculum, and the expansion of clinical education pathways aimed at addressing California’s physician shortage and the growing demand for coordinated, whole-person care.
