The $850 million privately funded Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side has catalyzed more than $123 million in public infrastructure spending, with total Chicago and Illinois investment expected to approach $200 million as Jackson Park is reshaped ahead of the center’s June 2026 opening. Since 2022, the city has rebuilt roadways, removed Cornell Drive to expand green space, added pedestrian underpasses, and improved flood control and traffic flow along DuSable Lake Shore Drive and Stony Island Avenue, supported by a $174 million state allocation. The Obama Foundation has also funded an adjacent $4.4 million accessible playground, alongside a $5 million library branch supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
