Baseball’s Giants pledge $28M for San Francisco park overhaul amidst tree removal pushback

The San Francisco Giants Community Fund in San Francisco, California, has pledged a $28 million gift toward a $60 million renovation of Crocker Amazon Playground, a major youth sports complex in the city’s Excelsior district. The funding, about half the total project cost, supports conversion of six baseball and softball diamonds into modernized fields, including synthetic turf installation and new lighting, with the remaining $22 million to be covered by the city’s Recreation and Park Department. The project also proposes renaming the facility for Giant’s icon Willie Mays. Plans include removal of 120 mature trees and extensive field resurfacing, sparking community opposition and ongoing environmental review before final approval and construction expected in 2027.
