Open Society Foundations commits $300M to U.S. democracy and civil society groups

The Open Society Foundations, founded by billionaire financier George Soros and now run by his son Alexander, has committed $300 million to support nonprofit organizations across the U.S. to defend democratic rights and advance economic security. The five-year pledge, which includes $20 million deployed this year, funds strategic litigation, nonprofit sector defense, and efforts to track government corruption, while backing efforts to strengthen civil rights protections and economic mobility through state-level policy work and civic participation programs. OSF aims to bolster organizations responding to political pressure on nonprofits and reinforce  civil society and rule-of-law infrastructure amid rising scrutiny of philanthropic funding.
