Minneapolis-based McKnight Foundation–with a $2.8 billion endowment–has significantly expanded its mission-aligned investing strategy under the leadership of departing vice president Elizabeth McGeveran, who is launching an independent consulting practice. The foundation now directs nearly 50% of its portfolio toward investments tied to social, economic, and environmental goals, including a 2050 net-zero commitment. Since 2014, McGeveran worked to shift the foundation from a 10% carveout approach to a full-portfolio integration strategy, using sustainability screening, carbon reduction targets, and inclusive manager selection. The approach leverages access to public and private markets, aiming to achieve market-rate returns while actively shaping more equitable and climate-resilient financial systems.
