The University of Sydney has announced a A$55M ($36.5M) co-investment in support of its Sydney Mathematical Research Institute to bolster Australia’s position in the global mathematics field. The funding includes A$28.7M ($19M USD) in philanthropic gifts from the Simon Marais Foundation and the Hooper Shaw Family Foundation, alongside A$26.4M ($17.5M) from the university. The awards will expand research programs, recruit global talent, and accelerate AI-driven mathematical discovery. The funding also strengthens early-career researcher support, international collaboration, and institutional growth to position SMRI as a leading global hub for advanced mathematics.
