Mary Black regifts Scott award, committing $6M to Spartanburg mental health initiative

The Mary Black Foundation has committed $6 million over five years to launch South Carolina’s Vital Spartanburg, a community-wide mental and behavioral health initiative. The investment has already helped attract an additional $7 million from donors including the Duke Endowment and United Way of the Piedmont, bringing initial campaign funding to $13 million. The initiative will coordinate healthcare providers, nonprofits, municipalities and philanthropists around prevention, treatment and system integration, with priorities focused on children and families, severe mental illness, and substance use disorders. The award from the foundation comes directly from MacKenzie Scott’s 2022 unrestricted $8 million gift.
